On the hunt for a ghost in a German castle

Ludwigsburg, Germany – Tour guide Thomas Weber has just taken part in a one-and-a-half hour nighttime ghost hunt in Ludwigsburg Castle in south-western Germany. He frowns as spirit medium Heike Maegel-Barth suddenly announces that she has made contact with the other side.

‘He says he was the last cooper to work here,’ she says. The ghost of the wine vat maker, it seems, has taken up residence in the castle’s cellar.

A few minutes earlier the group of ghost hunters was inside the castle chapel, illuminated only by the orange glow from the street lighting outside. Maegel-Barth says she made contact with the cooper during what she describes as an ‘active consultation.’ However, neither Thomas Weber nor the journalists taking part in the hunt got the opportunity to see the ‘rather shy’ ghost.

The consultation between medium and spirit is one method the members of Germany’s Ghost Hunters Agency use to track down the undead. There are about half a dozen groups belonging to the agency in Germany.

The members swing into action when news spreads that someone has had the feeling they have made contact with a spirit. In the case of Ludwigsburg Castle, word got out through an internet forum with descriptions of an unexplained ‘cold breeze’ that was felt in the castle. Agency chief Sandra Kunze then put in a request with the castle’s management to see if it was possible to begin the search for a ghost. Her request was agreed to.

On the hunt for a ghost in a German castle

Ludwigsburg, Germany â¤' Tour guide Thomas Weber has just taken part in a one-and-a-half hour nighttime ghost hunt in Ludwigsburg Castle in south-western Germany. He frowns as spirit medium Heike Maegel-Barth suddenly announces that she has made contact with the other side.

'He says he was the last cooper to work here,' she says. The ghost of the wine vat maker, it seems, has taken up residence in the castle's cellar.

A few minutes earlier the group of ghost hunters was inside the castle chapel, illuminated only by the orange glow from the street lighting outside. Maegel-Barth says she made contact with the cooper during what she describes as an 'active consultation.' However, neither Thomas Weber nor the journalists taking part in the hunt got the opportunity to see the 'rather shy' ghost.

The consultation between medium and spirit is one method the members of Germany's Ghost Hunters Agency use to track down the undead. There are about half a dozen groups belonging to the agency in Germany.

The members swing into action when news spreads that someone has had the feeling they have made contact with a spirit. In the case of Ludwigsburg Castle, word got out through an internet forum with descriptions of an unexplained 'cold breeze' that was felt in the castle. Agency chief Sandra Kunze then put in a request with the castle's management to see if it was possible to begin the search for a ghost. Her request was agreed to.

Agency members dressed in black clothing with the words 'Sensitive/Investigator' and 'Image interpreter' printed in yellow lettering on them arrived at the castle on a Saturday night. Early in the evening the team members set up their equipment of night-vision cameras, sound recorders and infrared thermometers.

'We'll record our measurements until about 3 am,' says Sandra Kunze. The team will then later examine the images, temperature swings and sound recordings for anything unusual.

'However, there's a rational explanation for 70 per cent of everything we find,' says Kunze. But she points out that 30 per cent cannot be accounted for and might have a paranormal source.

Kunze founded the agency, which is based near Lake Constance in southern Germany, two years ago. She says her interest in the supernatural began when she was 10-years-old. Kunze is a hairdresser by profession and she came into contact with like-minded people via the internet.

In the meantime she has investigated over 30 cases that have taken her to castles, stately homes and private houses and always on a no-fee basis.

The 28-year-old says her group has proven it's taking its work seriously by its use of technology and thorough checking of their findings, but Kunze says most Germans are very sceptical when it comes to research work in the area of paranormal activity. People in Britain, it seems, are much more open-minded.

By the time the ghost hunt draws to a close Thomas Weber's brow has relaxed. He says he may use some of his experience on the hunt in his next tour. After all, he says smiling, no self respecting castle can be without its own ghost.
